Since the power of the Karatekas punches and kicks are such that a single strike can kill an opponent, the old teachers trained their students in control (pulling back the strike before injuring the opponent) Oyama, however, felt that if beginners started with full contact before they developed the power to kill, they would be stronger, and better able to resist strong attacks.
After the death of the founders, Shito-ryu and Goju-ryu also developed splinter groups. Many of these groups have, however, kept in contact with the World Karate Federation and participate in their competitions.
There are also many so called karate `instructors,’ especially in India, who have neither studied the art under the masters nor achieved any degree of proficiency in the
techniques. These untrained instructors have banded together under styles calling themselves Budokan or Budoryu, and even have International competitions under the International Sports Karate Organization. Naturally, there is a world of difference between the discipline and power of the World Karate Federation and the International Sports Karate Association!
If you are wondering, with so many karate styles to choose from, which style you should join, or should send your children to, the choice is not so difficult. First of all, it is advisable to join a WKF recognized style, not so much because you will then get a chance at the SAF Games and the Asian Games, but because you can also expect a better standard of teaching than at an unrecognized group. If possible, check the instructors teaching license, and who issued the license. If you want your child to be aggressive, you should consider a full contact style (provided you don’t mind a few broken bones, now and then- these will heal!). On the other hand, the recognized styles teach control of power, and restraint. Goju-ryo trains in power and stamina. Shoto Kan trains for speed and power. Shito-ryo teaches grace in movements, and Wado-ryu teaches balance and power. However, all styles of karate develop the practitioner speed, stamina and strength. In the long run, what matters is that the dojo (karate school) should be near your home, should be of a recognized style, and should have a teacher with a licence from one of the recognized styles.
